The Day (Leviticus 16:1–34)

Guest Speakers

Many cultures around the world have a particular day around which the rest of the year pretty much revolves. For some, it may be a day of independence, or Christmas, or Easter, or a particular birthday. For Israel, the centrepiece of the calendar year was Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Leviticus 16 records the ceremonial requirements of this day, and they point us, ultimately, to God’s final atonement in Jesus Christ.

Christians often cling to the promises of God in times of great suffering. This provides spiritual strength, vigour, and life as the Holy Spirit ministers to our hearts. Isaiah 58 promises increased delight in the Lord, spiritual victory over sin, and the application of redemption to the heart of a believer. But these promises are not merely meant to be held in our minds; they shape our very affections as we delight in the Lord’s Day.
