Maximising Missions (Psalm 96:1-13)

Miscellaneous

Psalm 96 is one of great anticipation. Specifically it anticipates the day when the present reign of Jesus will be fully experienced in this world. There is coming a day when individuals from every peoples of the earth will sing the “new song” of praise to the glory of God. Fundamentally this Psalm is about the victorious reign of Christ over the nations, both now and through eternity. As we prepare for our WOC we will focus this Lord’s Day on our theme, which is “Missions and the Marginalised”; specifically, maximising our efforts to extend our mission to reaching and thus reducing the number of gospel marginalised. This psalm constitutes a promise of what the church can expect. This is no sentimental pie-in-the-sky-until-you-die melody, but rather a prophetic promise of what the church can expect one day. But it also serves as a clarion call for the church to do something in the light of the anticipation that it reveals. In short, it commands the church to sing, to submit and to be steadfast. And to the degree that this characterises our disposition, to such a degree we will maximise our efforts to reach the marginalised.
