Desperate Times Call for Deliberate Measures (Psalm 119:145–152)

By the Book

Desperate times call for deliberate measures. Psalm 119:145–152 gives us an insight in how best to handle the oppositions that arise in the Christian life. The power of sincere, deliberate and informed prayer is modelled by the psalmist, and we would do well to follow his example.

Psalm 119:153–160 addresses the need for personal revival in the life of the believer. We will look at these eight verses under two broad headings: (1) personal revival through our affliction (vv. 153–158); and (2) personal revival in our affection (vv. 159–160). The text draws our attention to three areas of affliction that can lead us to despair and a weakened desire for the glory of God: We are afflicted by the ungodly (v. 155), the oppressors (v. 157), and the faithless (v. 158).

Consider my affliction and deliver me,
for I do not forget your law.
Plead my cause and redeem me;
revive me according to your word.
Salvation is far from the wicked,
for they do not seek your statutes.
Great are your tender mercies, O LORD;
revive me according to your judgements.
Many are my persecutors and my enemies,
yet I do not turn from your testimonies.
I see the treacherous, and am disgusted,
because they do not keep your word.
Consider how I love your precepts;
revive me, O LORD, according to your lovingkindness.
The entirety of your word is truth,
and every one of your righteous judgements endures forever.
