CloseThe text before us, like every text in Scripture, is the word of God and is to be taken seriously. But, in a unique way, “This is the word of God” is the theme of this passage. While they claimed to submit to God’s word, the Pharisees actually usurped the word with their own traditions and opinions. Jesus rebuked them in order to teach his hearers that they must take seriously the Scriptures. And so must we.
