CloseOn the surface, Psalm 87 appears enigmatic and confusing. Its mention of ancient places, is, particularly for the modern reader, a bit baffling. What is going on here? In fact, something glorious is being recorded—and something very relevant for the modern church. In fact, it is very relevant regardless of the age in which one lives. Perhaps at first glance the new covenant believer may wonder at the value, or at least the relevance, of such a psalm. But once you grasp the underlying theme, the psalm takes on a wonderful tone and you may well find it as, not a confusing enigma, but an opportunity for celebratory edification.
