ClosePsalm 83 portrays the nation of Israel as “enfolded” by foes. We are not certain as to the exact historical context, but it is clear that God’s people were under attack. This psalm teaches us something about the historical and biblically significant reality of Israel being constantly opposed as a people. This is helpful for us as the new Israel of God. The church, like Israel, has been the object of many attacks throughout its history. The church, also like Israel, finds itself at times desperately crying out to God, who seems to be indifferent, for help. Both local churches and individual believers experience this. This psalm offers insight into how to respond, what to pray for and what to expect.
