The Reformation of Revelation III (Revelation 2:12-17)

Revelation Exposition

This study brings us to the letter to the church in Pergamos. The letter describes a church that stood strong against the evil ways of an evil community, but who failed to stand as strong against the evils in their own church community. That is, they were eager and willing to take dominion for Christ in their culture, but not as willing within their own church. The Lord thus assures them of judgement should they refuse to repent. It is almost inexplicable to think of a church refusing to tolerate evil in the community, yet willing to embrace it in their own assembly! How can a local church be so bold to denounce the evils of society, yet embrace similar evils amongst themselves? How can a local church tolerate that which the Lord Jesus Christ deems intolerable? An astounding thought, yet this was precisely the case in Pergamos.
