The Spiritual Discipline of Scripture Memorisation (John 16:4)

Spiritual Disciplines

The spiritual discipline of memorising Scripture is a natural result of reading and meditating on Scripture. More specifically, Scripture memorisation aids in preserving Christian truth and being conformed to Christian truth. Even before the writings of the New Testament took shape, Christians have been committing to memory the sayings of Jesus and early gospel formulations. In our own day, there are many situations where we rely solely on our memory. This forgotten discipline is much needed in our overly digitised culture.

The Roman church had many difficulties to deal with. One of them was the way in which Jews and Gentiles were to relate to one another in Christ. Paul exhorts them to not pass judgement on one another any longer. They are rather to consider how their actions might affect the walk of a fellow Christian. Such an exhortation is important to obey as pride so often hinders worship. The example of Christ and the work of his gospel bring people together in such a way that true worship takes place.
