Loneliness is a universal human experience. We long for community and companionship. Yet while there is wonderful meaning to be found in relationship, under the sun even relationships prove to be unsatisfactory and a striving after the wind. Nevertheless, we were made for community, and only in Christ can we recover and experience it according to God’s design.

Having experimented with wisdom and hedonism, Solomon reviews his experience and concludes that wisdom is better than folly but, in the end, both the wise and the fool die, so it really makes no difference how one lives because of the ever-present reality of death. Our only hope for meaning is in the defeat of death.
