The God-Ordered Community (Numbers 2:1–34)

Numbers Exposition

The opening chapters of Numbers record how Moses organised Israel for the march from Sinai to the Promised Land. The text makes it clear that this was a militant march. In the opening chapter, we consider the initial preparation for the march. Each Israelite was to stand and be counted. We, likewise, must stand to be counted, and remain committed, if we will be prepared for the war before us.

Numbers 13 is the story of defeat grabbed from the jaws of victory—of the failure of the mission because of the failure of faith. What should have been mission accomplished became mission defeated. Unbelief won the day. The consequence was forty years of wandering; forty years of being so close and yet so far away. Because the people looked back rather than looking up and forward, they experienced defeat where they could have experienced victory.
