CloseThe Sadducees are often referred to as theologically “conservative.” This is because they only affirmed the books of Moses (our Pentateuch) as inspired. On the other hand, the Pharisees were “progressive” because they embraced all 39 books of the Old Testament, as well as oral tradition. Regardless, both groups rejected the truth about Jesus and their rejection turned hostile. The encounters are sad because, in rejecting Jesus, they rejected their only hope to be saved from their sins. The encounters are sad because, in rejecting Jesus, they demonstrated that, though religious, they knew neither Scripture nor the power of God. That is a terribly sad way to live and even more terribly sad way to die. May God help us to reject such unbelief. Instead of sad, may we be glad.
