Horrible, Honest, Hopeful (Psalm 51:1–19)

Miscellaneous

The exposition of Psalm 51 is no easy task. As Spurgeon noted, this “psalm may be wept over, absorbed into the soul, and exhaled again in devotion; but, commented on—ah! Where is he who having attempted it can do other than blush at his defeat?” And yet it is necessary to expound the psalm. In fact, it may well be the most necessary of all psalms to expound (and hear expounded)—at least if you are honest about your sin. Sadly, we are often not honest about our sin. Like Adam and Eve, we try to hide our sin from others and from God. We need to have our fig leaves ripped away. Psalm 51 is a prayer of David that arose out of his repentance over his sin with Bathsheba. Like Adam and Eve, he had tried to hide it, but God had brought his sin to the surface and David had repented. This psalm is a beautiful prayer from the repentant heart of a saved sinner.
