Facing the Facts (Psalm 90:1–17)
Psalm 90 is probably the oldest of the Psalms. Written by Moses, “the man of God,” during Israel’s wilderness wanderings, the psalm is an honest facing of the facts of life. It is the kind of sobering assessment of reality that every one of us needs to be confronted with and guided by. This psalm, perhaps more than any other, highlights the major truth that one of the most significant facts of life is the fact of death. The psalm raises two fundamental questions concerning death: First, are you prepared to die? and, second, how will you live? The two questions are intimately connected: You can discern whether a person is ready to die by how he or she lives.
