The Goal of the Missionary in Missions (Colossians 1:24–29)

World Outreach Celebration 2019

There was a lot to be thankful for in the church at Colosse, but the church had at the same time become blind to some of the dangers that they faced. Paul wanted the church to be aware of those dangers, and so he wrote to warn them of those dangers. In 1:24–29, Paul’s tone turns somewhat biographical as he seeks to show them what the work of a faithful minister looks like. Faithful ministry is characterised by suffering, stewardship, and strength.

Keeping your eye on the ball and holding the line in the ministry can be a difficult thing. Staying faithful to the task to which the Lord has called you can be difficult because people tend to celebrate different things to those things which the Lord calls his people to celebrate. When the yardstick used to measure Christian faithfulness is not the Lord’s yardstick, it can be difficult to stay the course. Paul wrote Colossians to a church that was struggling to keep its eye on the most essential thing, and so he reminded them quite clearly of what that was: the gospel of Jesus Christ.

We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.
