Wait for One Another (1 Corinthians 11:33)

In 1 Corinthians 11, Paul addresses an assembly of conflicted Christians who gathered for an important ritual (the Lord’s Supper) while denying its message. One manifestation of this denial was a refusal of members to wait for each other before partaking of this meal. Some members—likely slaves—needed to wait till late before they could gather with the church, and in a meal that was designed to highlight the communion of the saints, those who arrived earlier were proving inconsiderate of others with whom they ought to have been enjoying fellowship. Paul urged the church to wait for them—to consider the empty stomachs of those less privileged. We, too, are to be considerate of others in the church so that no member is excluded and Christian unity is both declared and demonstrated.
