Paul’s intention, as he comes to the end of his exhortation concerning the church’s need to stand against the satanic schemes that seek to derail us from our pursuit of Christ and all things biblically Christian, is simple: “Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” He urges Christians to get a firm grip on the Scriptures. This is essential if we will experience the victory of obedience to our Lord. But I deliberately say the church’s need to stand, for the application here, while certainly applicable personally, must also be applied in the context of the church. The church will either stand or fall together. When it comes to taking the sword of the Spirit, Paul expects the church to do it together—to get a grip, together.
